I must stay this year has been the best Garden ever.
Remembering back to the first summer we were here.....There we stood....Looking at a grass covered, alfalfa covered, weed covered garden area. Thinking here is where we will make a garden..Grow food for our family.
It had once been a garden for many over the last 100 years...where they grew everything they needed to survive a very cold -40 Celsius winter. Everything they would need was planted, harvested, canned and stored to keep fed all winter.
When we got here it was overgrow and neglected. So we got out the new tractor and rototilled the garden...easy. rototill and plant. Right.....
Well...We were then left with 2 feet of mulched up, cut up grass and weeds on top. How would we ever plant anything in that.
We felt like the homesteaders must have felt, break prairie and plant a garden. The only difference is if ours did not work out then we could go to the grocery store and get everything we needed. The homesteaders however...could not.
With our luck a neighbour came by to see who we were, and what we were like...he saw our mess and offered to come back with a front end loader. Wow....And what a pile/Hill it made!!
That summer our Garden was born...once again. It has gotten better every year. We have been here for 5 gardens.
But this year it is the Best!! Martha Steward would be proud.
We have battled weeds, thistle, grasshoppers, crickets, weeds, drought ...you name it.
Mother nature has given us rain and sunshine for the most beautiful garden ever!!
We started lots of plants indoors, tomatoes of every size and shape, eggplants, gourds, Cabbage, broccoli, cucumbers, peppers of every colour imaginable.
Planted in the garden 300 onions, corn, beans, peas, radishes, collards, Swiss Chard, Zucchini, and a pumpkin.. Oh and Potatoes...who can forget potatoes. Or Totoes as my littlest calls then.
We had a lot of trouble with viney squash, pumpkins and melons this year???
However the pumpkins...squash...melons that were perhaps stolen or borrowed from the seed box by my little ones... then planted in hidden spots.... in my herb garden and other garden places.... seem to be doing....very, very well. It is exciting to see what they will become...
I planted herbs for my mothers day garden. Midwife herbs and other cooking herbs. Borage,Calendula, Fenugreek, Motherwort, Blessed thistle, Catnip, nettles.
Cooking herbs...dill, parsley, chives, oregano, mint, nasturtiums, green onions.
A patch for just salad making. Mixed greens, spinach, different kinds of lettuce, and flowers to make it pretty ....and to eat.
We are making many meals and wonderful memories in our little garden this year.
